How to evaluate healthcare AI vendors without getting trapped in demos

A buyer checklist for comparing healthcare AI vendors on workflow fit, compliance, and adoption reality.

Anchor the evaluation in a specific workflow

Healthcare AI products often sound compelling in isolation and disappointing in live operations because the real workflow boundary was never defined.

Start by naming the user, the system they live in, the handoff they are improving, and the failure mode you care about.

  • Who uses the product day to day?
  • What system of record does it touch?
  • What exact delay, error, or cost is it supposed to reduce?

Treat compliance posture as operational fit

Security and compliance are not only procurement checkboxes in healthcare. They determine whether rollout is realistic.

Ask what the vendor has already implemented versus what your team would have to operationalize itself.

  • HIPAA posture and BAAs
  • Audit logs and access controls
  • Data retention and deletion behavior
  • Implementation burden for IT and compliance teams

Look for adoption reality, not demo polish

Ask how the product performs when clinicians, staff, or patients use it at full pace. Products that win in scripted demos can still fail under real workflow pressure.
